Climate change affects us all, but not equally. Women’s World Banking reported that 753 million women in climate-vulnerable areas lack the financial resources to withstand its challenges — that’s nearly 10% of the world’s population left behind in the green transition.

With this data, gender-inclusive climate action is no longer a nice-to-have but an imperative. According to UN Women, women depend more on natural resources but have little or no access to them. A prolonged drought or raging floods can be devastating for these women, destroying their livelihoods and blocking their access to food and water.

Why Gender-Inclusive Climate Action is Important

Globally, the effects of climate change can increase gender-based violence. In a 2022 study by UN Women, 8 out of 10 women and girls are in charge of fetching water for their families, facing the risk of harassment and assault while en route.

Meanwhile, in the corporate world, there are gaps in leadership representation between men and women in many sectors, including renewable energy, where women are the least represented. While the transition to a greener world is happening rapidly, there is still a huge gender gap in climate finance, with not enough women leaders in the space.

Women are not just passive victims of climate change, they are the solution. The World Bank views that if women are placed in leadership positions, there is an increased likelihood of more robust climate actions and improved climate outcomes.
